Wireless Zone franchise owner Sean Moran and his family have spent much of the past month helping hundreds of homeless families in Northern Virginia stay warm.
He recently put the call out to customers of his two Wireless Zone locations, in South Riding and Herndon, asking for donations of warm socks. He also teamed with Jersey’s Subs and Pizza, who asked the same of its customers, and Goodluckstef Productions, who created a video to promote the sock drive. (View video here.)
They collected about 400 pairs of socks, and hit the streets Saturday to hand them out to men and women living in tent communities in Woodbridge. The folks from Jersey’s Subs and Pizza also tagged along and brought, what else, subs and pizza.
Moran, an Aldie resident, was inspired to distribute socks to homeless individuals a few years ago after reading an article about how many people donate food and jackets this time of year. “No one thinks to give them socks, so we went to the Dollar Store and bought 100 pairs of socks,” he said. His neighbors chipped in to help by making and delivering peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. “It was a really great experience for our family, so I thought I’d love to take this a little bit further,” he said.
That’s when he got in touch with Jersey’s Subs and Pizza and Goodluckstef Productions.
Moran said the men and women he’s met through the now-annual sock drive have made a big impact on him. “They are different than a lot of people, or at least how I, pictured homeless people,” he said. “They have jobs, but just don’t make enough to afford a roof over their head.”
The trio of businesses want to supply more people with warm socks throughout January and February. They are encouraging people to drop packs of new socks to either of the Wireless Zone locations: 25031 Riding Plaza, Suite 125, in South Riding; and 13340-E Franklin Farm Road in Herndon.
