Umstattd Formally Resigns As Leesburg Mayor

Starting tomorrow morning Leesburg will have a new mayor for the first time since 2002.

Kristen Umstattd  has formally tendered her resignation as mayor of Leesburg, effective 11:59 p.m. on Dec. 31. She begins her four-year term as the Leesburg District supervisor Jan. 1.

Vice Mayor Kelly Burk will perform the duties of the mayor until the Town Council makes an interim appointment.  The council can appoint a sitting council member or a qualified voter to the seat. The appointee will serve until a mayor is elected to serve a full two-year term in November.

The council is expected to discuss the issue during its Jan. 11 work session. Action could come as early at Jan. 12.

If the council fails to make an interim appointment within 90 days, the Circuit Court may do so.
