A 24-year-old Leesburg woman riding a bicycle in the center lane of the Leesburg Bypass is listed in critical condition after being struck by a car Wednesday.
According to the Leesburg Police Department, the town dispatch center received calls about 5:15 p.m. about a person riding a bike on the highway, causing vehicles to swerve around her. At 5:20 p.m., there was a report she had been hit. Responding officers found the victim in the roadway between South King Street and the Dulles Greenway suffering from multiple injuries.
She was struck from behind by a 2000 Ford Taurus driven by a 19-year-old woman from Purcellville.
The victim was flown by AirCare to Winchester Hospital where she remained in critical condition Thursday. Investigators have not determined why the bicyclist was riding with traffic in the center lane of the bypass.
The eastbound lanes of the bypass were closed until about 8:30 p.m. while the investigation was conducted.
