Purcellville Food Lion cashier Annie Daly was among 20 employees summoned to an emergency meeting at 9 p.m. Wednesday in which they were told the store would become a Shop ‘n Save outlet.
The action is part of a merger between the parent companies of the Giant and Food Lion supermarket chains, Royal Ahold NV and the Delhaize Group, in which 22 Food Lion stores, including the Purcellville facility at 609 E Main St., will be sold to the operator of Shop ‘n Save, part of Minneapolis-based SuperValu Inc.
On Wednesday, SuperValu announced the agreement to acquire Food Lion stores in Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Virginia. Daly said she understood that all employees would have a job at the new store, that there would be few changes to the existing premises and that the sale would occur in the third quarter of the year, probably in October.
The acquisition is subject to approval by the Federal Trade Commission, according to a Food Lion spokesperson at the meeting. The sale does not affect Food Lion stores in Leesburg or Sterling.
