CHARLOTTESVILLE, VIRGINIA– Tyler Ratliff’s 3-run home run in the top of the seventh inning broke a 2-2 tie and led the way for the Purcellville Cannons’ 7-2 victory over the Charlottesville Tom Sox on Wednesday night at C-Ville Weekly Ball Park.

Ratliff hit his second long ball of the night to lead off the ninth inning and cap off the game’s scoring. He joined second baseman Eriq White as the two Cannons to record mult-homer games this season.

The Cannons fell behind 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning on three consecutive 2-out Charlottesville hits off starter Tyler Yancey. The All-Star right-hander lasted three innings, but got out of a bases-loaded, 1-out jam in the third by issuing a 5-4-3 double play. Yancey has a 4.50 ERA in two starts this season, both no-decisions.

Purcellville got on the board in the top of the third after a throwing error allowed Jarrett Clymer to reach second base. Three batters later, Ratliff recorded the first of his season-high 5 RBI on the night with a SAC fly to left field.

Charlottesville starter Matthew Sullivan kept the Cannons’ offense quiet until designated hitter Ray Hernandez launched a solo home run to left center field with one out in the sixth to tie the game at 2. The Alabama State product’s homer was his team-leading fourth long ball of the season and first since June 26th.

Following Yancey’s exit, Mike Kaster and Will Reed shut down the Charlottesville offense the rest of the way, combining for six shutout innings, yielding just two hits. Kaster picked up his first victory of the season while Reed nailed down his VBL-north leading 5th save of the summer.

With the win and New Market’s 12-6 loss to Strasburg, the Cannons (15-22) are deadlocked with the Rebels for the fourth and final playoff spot in the north division.

Purcellville’s last scheduled off day is Thursday, they will be back in action when they host the Covington Lumberjacks (20-16) on Friday.

Mississippi State product Alex London will start for the Cannons against the Lumberjacks. In six starts this season, the southpaw from Tuscaloosa, Alabama is 1-1 with a 5.33 ERA. London would like to forget his last outing when he allowed seven earned runs in 3 2/3 innings against Strasburg on July 14th.

The Cannons are 11-7 at Fireman’s Field this season, 6-1 in the month of July.
