Officer McCartney Retires After 3 Decades with LPD

Master Police Officer Mark McCartney, a 30-year member of the Leesburg Police Department, retired Monday.

He joined the department in 1986, hired by former Chief of Police James Kidwell. During his career, he worked as a patrol officer, field training officer, patrol supervisor, motorcycle officer, firearms instructor, civil disturbance instructor, and radar instructor. He also served as a sniper on the department’s Special Operations Team and as a member of the Crash Reconstruction Team.

Among the gifts presented to McCartney during his July 28 retirement ceremony were letters from President Barack Obama and former President Bill Clinton, a Congressional record of service presented by a member of Congresswoman Barbara Comstock’s office, a departmental shadow box, a flag that was flown over the U.S. Capitol, and his service pistol which was engraved with his name and years of service to the town.
