LCSO: Bat-Toting Clown Scares Children at Sterling Playground

A person wearing a clown mask and carrying a baseball bat was reportedly scaring children at a playground in Sterling last night.

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office was called to the playground near the intersection of Commerce Street and Enterprise Street just before 6 p.m.

A spokesperson with the sheriff’s office said that a 12-year-old was identified as being involved in the incident and that the case is still pending.

Local law enforcement agencies issued statements earlier this month dismissing rumors going around some schools that people dressed of clowns were threatening violence. The social media messages, which were directed at specific Loudoun schools, come on the heels of similar postings around the county about people dressed as clowns and threats of violence.

Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity immediately by calling 703-777-1021.

Also, the Sheriff’s Office notes that it is illegal for any person over 16 years of age to wear a mask in public except during Halloween and a few other exceptions.
