UPDATE: Natural Gas Leak Causing Detours in Leesburg

Update: East Market Street is now open in both directions.

A natural gas leak just outside of downtown Leesburg closed a section of East Market Street today.

According to Lt. Wes Thompson of the Leesburg Police Department, Washington Gas was on the scene to fix the ruptured gas line. It is not known at this time if the rupture was due to the cold weather or just natural deterioration, Thompson said.

East Market Street is blocked off in both directions traffic beginning at its intersection with Fort Evans Road, near the Anita’s Mexican Restaurant. The gas line is in the area of Plaza Street and East Market Street, Thompson said. Much of the traffic has been rerouted to Edwards Ferry Road.

The leak had not necessitated any evacuations of nearby businesses or residences at press time, he confirmed.
