Driver Dies After Leesburg Bypass Crash

One of the drivers in yesterday’s two-vehicle crash on the Leesburg Bypass has died.

The Leesburg Police Department is investigating the crash that happened shortly after 12:30 p.m.. in the eastbound lanes  just past Children’s Center Road overpass.

Responding to a 911 call, officers arrived to find a red BMW and a white Ford Focus crashed on the  highway. The preliminary investigation indicates both vehicles were traveling eastbound when the BMW crashed into the rear of the Ford Focus. The impact caused the Ford Focus to leave the roadway and overturn.

Both drivers were transported to Reston Hospital Center. The driver of the Ford Focus, Rush Hone Elmore, 69, of Herndon, died at the hospital. The driver of the BMW was listed in stable condition.

The Leesburg Police Traffic Management Unit in conjunction with the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit are still investigating the circumstances that led to the crash.

It was the 15th highway fatality in Loudoun County since Nov. 1, 2016.
