At community gatherings all across Loudoun on Monday morning, residents paid tribute to those who died in military service. The largest Memorial Day event was held in Leesburg’s Courthouse Square where hundreds gathered to hear remarks by retired U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Susan S. Lawrence and witness the laying of wreaths at the monuments honoring Loudoun’s war dead.
Lawrence highlighted the heroic sacrifices made individuals on the battlefields in defense of their country throughout its history.
“In today’s world, freedom comes cloaked in uncertainty. America still relies on its sons and daughters to defend its liberty,” Lawrence said. “The costs of Independence remain high but we are willing to pay it. We do not pay it gladly, but we pay it with deep reverence and thanks to those who have sacrificed their lives for America.”
