Son Charged with Father’s Murder after House Fire Probe

A Leesburg-area man has been charged with first-degree murder following the investigation of the body that was discovered inside a burned home on Steed Hill Lane last week.

Michael F. Bowles, 20, was arrested Tuesday in Fairfax County. Investigators say he shot and killed his father, Mario M. Bowles, 52, and then set the house on fire.

The fire was discovered shortly after 5 p.m. on Tuesday, July 25 when a passerby reported seeing smoke in the area. Crews worked through the night to completely extinguish the fire. The next day investigators were able to search what remained of the home. At approximately 1 p.m., they discovered a body inside the residence.

The victim was positively identified by the Office of the Medical Examiner on Monday.

Michael Bowles was held at the Fairfax County Detention Center, awaiting transport to Loudoun County.

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office is conducting the homicide investigation in cooperation with the arson investigation being completed by the Loudoun County Fire Marshal’s Office.
