According to a recent report in the New York Times compiled from hundreds of health agencies, drug overdose deaths in 2016 were somewhere between 59,000 and 65,000 and rising. This opioid epidemic is now the main cause of death among Americans under 50.
In our Commonwealth of Virginia, over a 1,000 people have died. Governor McAuliffe has declared a state of emergency about this problem. And fortunately, our delegate, Kathleen Murphy, recognizing the carnage opioid addiction has caused, has worked tirelessly in a bipartisan way to initiate, promote and support legislation to find a solution.
By her efforts, she has helped the Virginia state government to do what the dysfunctional Republican White House and the Republican representative of the 10thdistrict in the dysfunctional Republican-controlled Congress seem to have no clue about what to do. In fact, in the Trump budget, the Republican solution to this epidemic is to cut the funding that helps federal, state and local authorities with this affliction.
Delegate Murphy knows, to fight this disease, there is no Republican or Democratic solution. It has to be an “all hands on deck” effort using all remedies that have worked to assist the people who desperately need help.
