It was with great fanfare Wednesday night that FCBescola opened its Northern Virginia soccer training academy at the Evergreen Sportsplex near Leesburg.
The grand opening celebration featured FC Barcelona club officials, the Sporting Global leadership team, and FC Barcelona legend Sergi Barjuan. The FC Barcelona soccer club partnered with Sporting Global to make the Northern Virginia-based training academy—its third in the United States—a reality.
Sporting Global CEO John Nash noted to the audience, which included many academy students and parents, that the academy has a top of the line facility, uniforms, and a training plan, but that’s far from the most important thing.
“Why we’re here is to help you raise great kids. Period. End of story,” he said in addressing the parents.
Nash noted that the goal of the academy is not so much to learn about how to be better at soccer, but “learning about life and positive values.”
Barjuan also encouraged the students to take advantage of their special opportunity.
“The academy has all the tools, but the most important is the desire to learn,” he said.
Also participating in the grand opening ceremony were Inaki Andreu, FCBescola’s coordinator of international projects; Georgia Pavlostathis, general manager of the Northern Virginia escola; and Juan Carlos Garcia Suarez, the technical director of the Northern Virginia escola.
