Updated: State Police are continuing their investigation into this morning’s fatal crash on Rt. 9 east of Hillsboro, but it appears the driver was undertaking a dangerous maneuver to pass a slower tractor trailer.
The crash happened at 4:42 a.m. Oct. 13.
According to a preliminary report by the State Police, a tractor trailer was traveling east on Rt. 9 near Purcellville Road when three vehicles following behind it pulled into the westbound lane to pass it. That segment of the highly traveled two-lane road is marked as a no passing zone. The first two vehicles made it around the tractor trailer and back into the eastbound lane. The third vehicle did not. As it come into the curve heading east in the westbound lane, it struck head-on a westbound Dodge Charger.
The adult male driver of the eastbound passing vehicle died at the scene. State police are still in the process of notifying his next of kin.
The adult male driver of the westbound car was flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital for treatment of injuries described as serious, but not life threatening.
