Classes in Loudoun Canceled Today; Schools Open for Activities

Today marks the fourth day this academic year that local schools have been closed due to inclement weather.

Loudoun County Public Schools initially announced early this morning that schools would open, but on a two-hour delayed start. Administration later decided to close school, because of icy conditions. Administration offices opened on time this morning.

School buildings will open this afternoon for after-school and extracurricular activities.

Already this winter is proving to take more of a toll on schools, compared to last winter. During the 2016-2017 academic year, students only had two snow days in March.

I left my home in Leesburg this morning at 5:00 AM and it was 36 degrees. Not icy. How about we open school instead and anyone who feels endangered gets an excused absence? Approaching the tail end of winter, I know there is pressure to use all the allotted snow days but c’mon this is ridiculous.

The LCPS administration opened on time. Private employers opened on time. The Loudoun sheriff’s office opened on time. The Loudoun County government opened on time.

Ok, so you want to protect kids and bus drivers. The obvious choice is to have all teachers report as normal and swap a future workday with today. The kids don’t miss out on any instruction time and the teachers get the same amount of planning/PD time.

Why exactly were the teachers given the day off?
