About The LIFECentre

Hello from The LIFECentre and welcome to our new “Loudoun Now” blog!

For this first post, we wanted to introduce ourselves, who we are, and why we are your local veterinary experts. In future posts, we will share guidance and recommendations from our team of veterinarians and technicians, seasonal pet information, what we’re up to in the community with our schedule of events, as well as answer questions you may have submitted to us via our Facebook page.

We see both cats and dogs in our practices and have occasionally been called in to help other species (i.e. -an orangutan – owls – camels – alpacas – snakes – parrots) and we love to share our experiences caring for them as well.

As you may remember from any journalism classes the questions – Who? What? When? Where? Why? and How? are the questions people want answers to. So – we’ll start there!

Who Are You?

We are the largest veterinary emergency and veterinary specialty hospital within 100 miles of Leesburg. Many pet owners meet us for the first time in an emergency as we’re open 365 days a year, 24 hours a day.

When your pets regular veterinary hospital is closed – middle of the night – Christmas Day – Easter Sunday – We are here for pets that are ill or injured with a full staff of veterinarians and technicians. In addition to our 24 hour services, we are a veterinary specialty hospital.

Just as your primary care physician may send you for a consultation to a cardiologist , or you may see an oral surgeon to have a difficult dental procedure, and you see an ophthalmologist for your glasses – we are specialists for your pets! In fact, we have 16 veterinary specialties, and full time board certified veterinarians and as a result offer unparalleled care for pets with complex or critical medical conditions.

For a veterinarian to be a board certified specialist they have not only attended college, four years of veterinary school, a one year internship – they have received another 2 to 5 years of training in a specialty field as a resident. The doctor then has to pass examinations given by the board of that specialty to earn the credentials and title. You will notice additional initials such as – DACVIM – or DACVO which stands for Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine or Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmology respectively after our specialists names and DVM or VMD title.

What Do You Do?

We see emergencies and critically ill pets 24 hours a day – 7 days a week. The pets and families that are referred to our veterinary specialists are seen by appointment Monday – Saturdays depending on the hours of each practice. If your primary care veterinarian has concerns about your pet due to an advancing illness or injury, they will refer your pet to us, and furnish their medical records and test results and we will collaborate with them to provide the best care for your dog or cat. As partners on your pets “medical team” we hope to provide answers to why your pet is not feeling well and can also provide advanced testing or diagnostics.

We offer the basics – bloodwork – digital radiographs – ultrasounds to the more advanced – CT imaging, MRI imaging, radiation oncology, chemotherapy, hyperbaric oxygen, echocardiograms and more! Our hospital is over 25,000 square feet, in 2 buildings and is state-of-the-art.

When Are You There?

We are here 24 – 7! Our hospital is staffed with our veterinarians When you have critically ill pets, – those recovering from neurosurgery, a full hip replacement or are ill from ingesting a toxin or foreign body for example – round the clock care is essential. 24 hours a day our licensed veterinary technicians and doctors are with pets like these. When we have a pet on a ventilator or in our ICU, our technicians never leave their side. If they need the restroom? Another technician takes their place to monitor our patients until they return. For pets recovering from surgery, they’ll need to go out for assisted walks, be given their medications on a strict schedule, have their bandages changed etc., we are here.
