With a ribbon-cutting ceremony last week, the medical staff celebrated the new Inova Schar Cancer Institute – Peterson Family Breast Center, located on the hospital’s main campus in Lansdowne. The 3,800-square-foot suite is designed to complement the hospital’s existing accredited breast program and provide women with convenient and comprehensive care close to home.
The Peterson Family Breast Center features state-of-the-art detection and diagnostic imaging services, breast navigation, genetic counseling and the Life with Cancer program, all in one location. Life with Cancer is a not-for-profit program that provides free support and education for cancer patients and their families. That support comes in the form of fitness and wellness classes, counseling and therapy, regardless of where the patients are treated.
Additionally, fellowship-trained breast radiologists will read all mammograms. The Breast Center complements Inova Loudoun Hospital’s existing accredited breast program and patient’s care is integrated with the national experts at the Inova Schar Cancer Institute.
The breast cancer center was made possible by a $1 million donation from the Peterson family.
The family has been involved with Inova cancer programs for 30 years. Several family members have served on various Inova boards and volunteered with the Life with Cancer program.
Lauren Peterson, who lives in Loudoun, said she’s seen firsthand Inova’s high integrity when it comes to serving patients.
“Philanthropy takes any system that is good to the next level. We are proud to be one of those people. This community deserves the best care and we are really happy to be on this journey with Inova,” she said.
Last year, almost 253,000 women across the United States were diagnosed with breast cancer, the most common type of cancer among women.
Dr. Donald “Skip” Trump, CEO and executive director of the Inova Schar Cancer Institute, said the Petersons’ generosity will go a long way in helping patients when they need it most.
“My colleagues and I at the Inova Schar Cancer Institute extend our deep appreciation to the Peterson family for their continued generous support to Inova, support which in so many ways contributes to the health and well-being of the members of our community,” he stated. “We cannot thank you enough.”
