Local Winemakers to Acquire North Gate Vineyard

Mark and Vicki Fedor today announced they’ve reached an agreement to sell their North Gate Vineyard to Mike Wheeler and Nate Walsh, the Loudoun County-based team that produces Walsh Family Wine.

The terms of the deal, expected to close next month, were not disclosed.

The Fedors in July announced plans to sell their 26-acre winery, where they first planted grapes in 2002 and began commercial wine production in 2007. In 2011, they opened a solar-powered winery and tasting room. The vineyard is located on Hillsboro Road north of Purcellville.

Wheeler and Walsh have been in business together for two years operating Walsh Family Wine and consulting for area wineries. Walsh Family Wine has two vineyards in the Waterford area, but to not operate a public tasting room. Walsh has worked in the Virginia wine industry since 2004 and is president of the Virginia Vineyards Association.

According to the announcement, Wheeler and Walsh plan to continue the current operations at North Gate.

“Vicki and I are proud to be able to pass North Gate Vineyard over to the very accomplished hands of Nate and his team,” Mark Fedor said in the announcement. “His passion for producing quality Virginia wines and his commitment to the Virginia Wine industry parallel our own and are a natural complement to continue and build upon what we have created here at North Gate.”

“To me, Mark and Vicki have always stood out as winegrowers with a passion for the process, for continual education, and a quiet, humble pursuit of quality as its own purpose. They have been producing some of the best wines in Loudoun County for quite a few years.” Walsh stated. “It is an honor to be able to build upon their hard work, to continue to grow North Gate as a producer of premium wines. Mark and Vicki have always been wonderful, friendly colleagues, and we will do our best to make them proud.”

North Gate produces 5,000 cases of wine annually, including its Virginia Governor’s Case award-winning Meritage blend and Petit Verdot which have been named to the Governor’s Case four out of the past five years.

Walsh Family Wine was founded in 2014 by Nate Walsh and his wife, Sarah. Nate Walsh started his wine industry career as a cellar rat at Horton Vineyards in Central, Virginia. He went on to work in vineyards and wineries in the Willamette Valley and Central Otago before spending seven years as the winemaker and vineyard manager for Sunset Hills Vineyard near Purcellville. Sarah Walsh has a background in fine dining, fine wine sales, and wine education. She began her career at restaurants in Chicago, Atlanta, and Northern Virginia, before shifting into fine wine sales, working for a wholesaler/importer on the East Coast.
