W&OD Trail Assault Suspect Nabbed with Tracking App

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office made an arrest today in the April 22 assault of a cyclist on the W&OD Trail, thanks to a fitness tracking app and information from the public.

Edward A. Shortnacy, 48, of Vienna, is charged with malicious wounding.

The charge stems from an incident April 22 when the victim was riding his bike west on the W&OD Trail near Ashburn Village Boulevard and was attempting to pass two bicyclists. He was reportedly riding on the center line when the suspect was coming from the opposite direction. The suspect reached his arm out intentionally and struck the victim on his helmet. The victim was knocked off the bike and sent to the hospital for treatment of his injures. The suspect rode away.

Detectives determined that the suspect was using the STRAVA app as he traveled in the area. Shortnacy was identified during the course of the investigation and interviews with witnesses,

Shortnacy surrendered to authorities Thursday morning and was released on a $5,000 unsecured bond.
