Now in its fourth year, the town’s quirky Berserkle on the Squirkle 5K this year has a theme of “May the Fourth Be With You,” according to Mayor Bob Zoldos.
He expects to see a few Darth Vaders on hand for the Jan. 1 event.
Previously, the town had a New Year’s Eve party, but it proved hard to attract participants, Zoldos said, noting New Year’s Day is a much easier time to get the community together.
The 5K—which can be a jog, walk or run around the Squirkle, as the Town Square is known—is not a timed event. Runners can stop for a breather or chat with a friend. “It’s not terribly athletic,” the mayor said in an understatement. The whole purpose is to have fun and to get to know your neighbors. It takes 27 laps to complete the 5K, and organizers have a different theme for each one—such as doing a twist, running backwards, steeplechasing, and meeting a new friend.
The event also features the Pit Row display of local business.
There is a $10 entry fee and Zoldos said the town will be giving away T-shirts and, new this year, stadium blankets, colored royal blue to match the town’s Bavarian flag colors. Zoldos is hoping for cooler weather so the blankets can provide some comfort.
Registration starts at 10 a.m. and the race at 11 a.m. The event will last about one-and-a-half hours. Check the event’s Berserkle on the Squirkle Facebook page or call the Town Office at 540-822-5788.
