Looks like Loudoun students will have a bit less time to visit Grandma for the holidays next school year.
The School Board tonight adopted the school system’s academic calendar for 2018-2019, opting for a schedule that calls for another Thursday start and an 11-day winter break.
The board unanimously chose a calendar named Option C. The school year will start for students on Thursday, Aug. 23, and teachers will start eight days earlier on Aug. 15. Winter break will run from Dec. 21 through Jan. 1. To make up for that additional day off in December, the last day of the school year will be June 7. Spring break will be April 15-19.
Even though the adopted calendar has a longer winter break than the other option the board was considering, Option A, it is slightly shorter than this year’s, which runs from Dec. 18 through Jan. 1.
Chairman Jeff Morse (Dulles) joked that most of the emails he received ahead of tonight’s vote asked for a longer winter break and an earlier ending to the academic year. But, he added, of the reasonable requests he received, most parents and teachers preferred Option C.
