A portion of the Tillett Auction Barn property in Ashburn will soon be the site of an elementary school.
The Loudoun County School Board voted last week to purchase a portion of the property—the end opposite of where the auction barn sits—near the intersection of Belmont Ridge and Waxpool roads.
The 13.47-acre site cost $3.7 million. It will serve as a campus for a not-yet-named elementary school, now referred to as ES-31. It is slated to open in fall of 2019.
School Board member Joy Maloney (Broad Run) acknowledged that it was not a perfect location for an elementary school. “I know you’re working to make it as safe as possible knowing you’re up against Belmont Ridge,” she told staff members at the Nov. 28 board meeting.
On the plus side, she added, an elementary school in that area will likely free up enough space in nearby Mill Run and Hillside elementary schools to provide full-day kindergarten.
Board member Eric Hornberger (Ashburn) said the school system has searched for a long time for a school site in that area. “The problem is trying to find sites in developed areas. I’m pleased that it looks like we finally found a solution.”
