A small fire ignited in a classroom at the Academy of Science, housed in Dominion High School in Sterling last night.
The fire started just after 11 p.m. The fire suppression system was activated and the fire quickly extinguished, according to Wayde Byard, public information officer for Loudoun County Public Schools. The fire was in a classroom on the school’s second floor.
The ceiling sprinklers caused some water damage to a dozen classrooms on the second floor and another dozen on the first floor. Crew members from the school system’s Facilities Services Department worked through the night and, by 7 a.m., all but eight classrooms could be used during the school day.
“We informed students and staff of this shortly after 7 and school started at the usual time,” Byard said.
