Leesburg Police Offer Solutions For Prescription Medication Misuse

In an effort to help curb abuse and misuse of opioids, the Leesburg Police Department is promoting a new program offered at Walmart stores.

Walmart has launched a free opioid disposal system in all pharmacies. DisposeRx is a small packet containing ingredients that are to be emptied into a pill bottle with warm water. The reaction allow patients to responsibly dispose of leftover medications in their trash at home.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and the National Institute of Drug Abuse, more than 65 percent of people misusing prescription opioids are getting them from family and friends, and personal prescriptions are one of the main sources of nonmedical opioid abuse.

Also, the Leesburg Police Department has a medication disposal drop box that offers a safe and environmentally responsible way to dispose of medications, including controlled substances. The box is located in the lobby of the Leesburg Police Department located at 65 Plaza Street NE.
