Although it still has a ways to go in the legislative review process, a proposed retail development off the intersection of Russell Branch Parkway and Battlefield Parkway got its first approval last week.
The Town Council voted 6-1 on July 24 to approve a Town Plan amendment for the project. The action gives the applicant, Peterson Companies, flexibility to develop retail space on land designated for regional office.
Peterson Companies has also submitted special exception and rezoning applications, which are currently under staff review. The 10-acre property is next to the Lowe’s home improvement store. According to a staff report, the applications envision a niche grocery store; a service station with convenience food sales and a vehicle service facility; eating establishments; and additional retail and service uses.
The proposed uses are in line with what is envisioned in the Eastern Gateway District small area plan, which was just presented to the Town Council in early July and looks to begin review at the council level shortly.
Mayor Kelly Burk was the lone dissenter on the vote, reiterating her desire for job-creating office development on the site rather than retail.
