A Marshall man pleaded guilty Thursday to aiming the beam of a laser pointer at planes on the landing approach to Dulles Airport. He faces a sentence of up to 5 years in federal prison.
According to the U.S. Dept. of Justice, Nicholas Pifer, 45, struck the cockpit of two commercial aircraft, but the planes managed to land safely. All four pilots reported seeing the cabin illuminated with a green light.
Pifer pleaded guilty to one count of aiming a laser pointer at an aircraft. A federal district court judge will determine his sentence during a Dec. 21 hearing, after taking into account the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
