For 25 years, runners have been getting up early on Thanksgiving morning to run the Ashburn Farm 10K/5K. Despite Thursday’s freezing temperatures, the event again drew more than 2,500 participants.
The event supports Crossroads United Methodist Church’s mission supporting children in Uganda, Africa. The outreach began in 1999 when 12 members of the congregation helped to build a there and returned with the goal of providing more help. The HUMBLE United Methodist Primary School opened in 2004, with space for 67 students from preschool through fourth grade. Since then, the school has expanded to seventh grade and 250 students. While the UMC General Board of Global Ministries broke ties with the East Africa Conference and no longer supports the HUMBLE school, the Crossroads congregation continues to sponsor the educational advancement of many of the school’s graduating students.
