Editor: Once again, our country has the opportunity to enshrine the Golden Rule in our Constitution. “Treat others as you would have them treat you” is required in the Christian faith and also an integral belief of Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and every other major religion.
The Equal Rights Amendment simply states, “Equality of rights under the law shall not be abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.” That means equality under the law regardless of whether you are a man or a woman. That means treat each other fairly—just as you would want to be treated. That is the Golden Rule.
While this principle has been in the state constitution of Virginia for almost half a century, bringing it into our country’s Constitution would set it in stone. The Constitution is not yet interpreted to fully provide this protection.
The Equal Rights Amendment is about family and treating sons and daughters fairly. It’s about valuing and respecting each person. It’s about Love.
I am writing to encourage you to do all that you can to pass the Equal Rights Amendment.
