Democrat Ibraheem S. Samirah was the winner in Tuesday’s special election for the 86thHouse District and will take his seat in Richmond during the final days of the 2019 General Assembly session.
The Herndon dentist is the son of Palestinianimmigrants and the second Muslim to be elected to the assembly. He defeated Republican Gregg Garrett Nelson in the race to fill the vacancy created by the election of Jennifer Boysko to the state Senate last month.
Samirah and Nelson ran close in the district’s Loudoun County precincts but won overwhelmingly on the Fairfax side. The unofficial vote totals were 3,746 for Samirah and 2,162 for Nelson. Independent Connie Haines Hutchinson had 370 votes or 5.89 percent.
Samirah was sworn in Wednesday morning.
