The entrance to the Tavistock Farms neighborhood in Leesburg is about to change.
Town Council members Tuesday night approved a special exception for a 40-foot-high storage facility at the corner of Sycolin Road and Tavistock Drive, just outside the Tavistock Farms neighborhood.
Right Away Storage’s plans call for a 105,500-square-foot building. The applicant has attempted to make the self-storage facility take on more of an “office-like” appearance due to its proximity to the neighborhood, project manager Scott Parker said. And most council and community members who spoke at Tuesday’s meetings lauded the design, noting that is an improvement on current site conditions at the intersection, which included a vacant parking area.
Councilman Josh Thiel was the only council member to vote against the project. Thiel noted that he grew up in the neighborhood and had many community members urging him to vote against the project. He said he liked the overall concept of the project, but did not like its proximity to homes.
Councilwoman Suzanne Fox was absent for the vote.
