Sterling Fencers Medal at Nationals; Joyce Still First

Fencers at Cardinal Fencing Academy in Sterling brought home five medals from the USA Fencing Summer Nationals in Columbus, OH.

Michaela Joyce, 15, earned a fifth place in Junior (20 and under) Women’s Epee and a Silver Medal in Cadet (17 and under) Women’s Epee. That means she stays in the number one position in the race to quality for the World Championships in Salt Lake City, UT, in April 2020.

The results follow Joyce’s silver medal finish at the Division 1 National Championship competing against Olympians, world championships and top NCAA athletes in Salt Lake City in April.

It was not the only victory for Cardinal Academy students. A combined team of Iliya Mechkov and Robert Harris of Boston, MA; Alex Ratchinine of Herndon; and David Hitchcock of Leesburg won the Veteran Team Men’s Epee (40 and over) National Championship. That makes Hitchcock and Ratchinine three-time national champions in the event.

The team, named “Ripostal Service 4: Iliya’s Revenge,” awarded the Coach’s Medal to Cardinal Fencing Academy founder Ilya Lobanenkov.

“It’s great to see that we have multi-generational champions in the North Virginia area,” Lobanenkov stated. “There is nothing more rewarding than to watch younger fencers learn from the more experienced ones and in turn, the more experienced ones gain a refreshing new perspective from the youth. Fencing is a creative and living sport, it never gets old.”
