Town Still Seeking Council, Commission Applicants

The Town of Round Hill is still seeking applicants to fill a vacancy on the Town Council and Planning Commission.

On July 5, Fred Lyne resigned from the Town Council just a year into his second four-year term at the meeting table. On July 17, Reed Mayer resigned from the Planning Commission. Residents were initially asked to submit their letters of interest for either spot by Aug. 31, but the town received no interest by that point.

Those interested in applying for a council or commission spot are required to have lived within the town’s corporate limits for at least six months. They should submit a letter of interest and resume by Oct. 21 to Town Administrator Melissa Hynes at mhynes@roundhillva.org and Mayor Scott Ramsey at sramsey@roundhillva.org. They can also submit their applications at the town office at 23 Main Street, P.O. Box 36, Round Hill, VA 20142.

The selected interim councilmember will take the spot until the town holds a special election next May. The winner of that election will remain on the council until the term expires on June 30, 2022. The Town Council is reviewing the Planning Commission’s recommendation for an amendment to the town’s 2017-2037 Comprehensive Plan to prepare for a possible extension of water and sewer service to properties outside the town limits.

The new planning commissioner, whom the Town Council will appoint, will remain in the seat until the term expires on Dec. 31, 2020. He or she will help with work on zoning and comprehensive plan modifications as needed.

Hynes said that if the council holds interviews between Oct. 21 and Nov. 1, it could appoint a new council member and planning commissioner at its Nov. 7 meeting.

That would be 34 days past the Town Council’s Sept. 3 appointment deadline. Under the Town Charter, the Town Council has 60 days from the date of a council vacancy to make an appointment.

This it isn’t the first time the council has run past its appointment deadline in recent times. Last December, the Town Council appointed Melissa Hoffmann to the meeting table about 90 days after Michael Minshall resigned.
