Letter: Barbara Hyde, Ashburn

Editor:  Recently I received literature at my home supporting Buta Biberaj from a group called “New Virginia Majority.”

According to this group’s website, they were instrumental “in restoring voting rights to thousands of formerly incarcerated people in Virginia.” In other words, a group that advocates for the rights of convicted felons is supporting Buta Biberaj for Commonwealth’s Attorney. This group does not mention anything on its website about public safety or of the rights of victims of crime, only about those who commit serious crimes.
Given Buta Biberaj’s criminal advocacy, one wonders who would support such a candidate? It is clear the reason this organization that advocates for criminal’s rights is supporting Buta Biberaj—because they know Biberaj will not put public safety first. Buta Biberaj not only lacks any sort of prosecuting experience, she has spent her professional career defending and advocating for the worst type of criminals including child molesters.

Our quality of life here in Loudoun is excellent, due in large part to the efforts of the Commonwealth’s Attorneys office under Nicole Wittman’s leadership. Nicole has been serving the people of Loudoun for 16 years. I urge my neighbors to keep our community safe and cast their votes for Nicole Wittmann. Nicole Wittmann is the best choice for Commonwealth’s Attorney because she believes criminals belong in prison.

New Virginia Majority “builds the power of marginalized communities to change the political systems that aren’t working for us.” I’m not sure what the “gotcha” is here—Ms. Biberaj is pretty openly in support of combining safety and justice to reduce mass incarceration, and decrease recidivism. This includes restoring the voting rights of felons who have served their sentence, which is well-proven to achieve those aims.

Restoration of voting rights is proven to revude recidivism, and is something that should happen every single time someone has finished their sentence. This is one of the many reasons why Arlington and Falls Church voted OUT their incumbent CA in the primary, and it’s why Buta will win in Loudon in November!
