Walk 4 Mountains Returns Oct. 12

Want to get some exercise in some of western Loudoun’s most gorgeous scenery for a great cause? The second annual Walk 4 Mountains breast cancer walk takes place Saturday, Oct. 12.

Participants will take a scenic 9.5-mile walk from Lovettsville to Hillsboro, starting at Lovettsville’s Walker Pavilion and traveling Mountain Road to Hillsboro United Methodist Church. The event is the brainchild of Lovettsville mom and breast cancer survivor Nicole Clark. Proceeds will support breast cancer patients through two area nonprofits: Loudoun Breast Health Network and Step Sisters.

“These are wonderful local charities that support those in the thick of treatment,” Clark said.“They help pay bills during treatment, take care of children, yard work, house cleaning, rides to chemotherapy; things that do not take care of themselves when you are sick.”

Last year’s event raised more than $10,000, and Clark is hoping to more than double the number of participants this year. Not a walker? Organizers are offering a chance to sponsor student walkers or simply make a donation.

At the end of the road, participants can enjoy a catered lunch from Andy’s, Magnolias at the Mill, Rasco’s Pizza and Bonnie’s Country Kitchen, with treats from Sweet Rose Bakery, Moo Thru ice cream and Catoctin Coffee.

This year’s event also features 3D mammograms through Sentara’s mobile unit with reservations available online. Financial aid is available for uninsured patients.

“I love where I live and wanted to do something to help people that are going through what I already went through right here in my area.,” Clark said. “May 6, 2013 the pathology report came back. Three words changed my life for good: ‘You have cancer.’ I was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer when I was 39 years old. I had zero family history. My daughter was 8. My husband and I were thrown into a tailspin over the next 14 months for treatment, chemotherapy and surgeries. I now hold events to tell my story—no holds barred in our community and in my workplace with my doctors. I strongly promote 3D mammograms and inform women of the truth about breast cancer.”

Walk 4 Mountains takes place Saturday, Oct. 12 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event begins at Walker Pavilion, 11 Spring Farm Road, Lovettsville. Registration is $40 per person or $65 per family of four.
