Letter: J.J. and LeAnne McNamara, Purcellville

Editor: Regarding the infighting and character assassination in the campaign for the county’s Soil and Water Conservation District board, we are disappointed in the accusations leveled at Michelle Thomas (and collaterally at Ron Campbell) by John Flannery (“Democrats Battle in Soil and Water”, 10/3/19).

Without question, our county deserves a racially diverse government which represents the concerns and needs of our increasingly diverse community. Locally governing bodies are an excellent place to begin the steps it will take to achieve the goal of government reflecting the community.

We know Michelle Thomas (and Ron Campbell) and take offense at Flannery’s attacks on their character and intent. Calling Thomas “unsuited for public office” offends anyone who knows her. She has been a lonely voice searching to hold our local government to task when it comes to racial justice and diversity.  We support her effort to broaden the racial makeup of government and unapologetically support her broadly.

Listen, I am all over racial justice and diversity in government. I grew up here during the last gasps of Jim Crow. I attended “segregated” Kindergarten and went to school with Loudoun’s version of sharecroppers.

Here’s the thing- as much as I welcome diversity in Government. I’m just not sure about diversity on the Board of Soil and Water Conservation merely for the sake of diversity. I want a person who’s up to speed on water and soil quality and versed in land conservation practices. I don’t think it’s a very good place to serve as a political stepping stone for a person who doesn’t bring some knowledge on the topics at hand.

I think Mrs Thomas needs to look within and figure out how to best work with people that she’s pretty much on the same side as.

Mrs. Thomas is a racist and Flannery went outside the proper channels with his grievance proving both are not fit to be in a position of power.
